The Weekend Guide May 19th-21st, 2017

Friday, May 19th– This weekend is more than just a few days off, it’s filled with good cause! You will have plenty of chances to not only feel good this weekend but DO good. There is something for everyone to begin integrating themselves into being an active part of this city. We have animals, exercise, beers, acrobats, music, networking and fundraising. Portland to the core!

Friday will kick off the weekend when ReVision and Portland Trails come together at 2pm for a “Clean-Up Day.” First we will meet in the Back Cove Trail parking lot and then they invite us to do the 5k as a run or walk to help make Portland a better place, literally, because whether you walk or run, you will carry gloves and a trash bag to clean up the infamous loop.

Do you know anyone who is thinking about adopting man’s best friend? The Fish & Bone will host the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland from 3-5pm. Because it’s located right on Commercial Street in Portland you can stop in and see hello to our four legged friends and show them some love, don’t forget to tell your friends about Puppy Adoption Day, free kisses!

At 4pm Hops for Hope will begin at Rising Tide Brewery. We’ve mentioned that it is Mental Health Awareness Month but May is also ALS Awareness Month. The Hope-JG Foundation will be here raising money for those with families with ALS. In particular they highlight proceeds going to the expensive needs of those who have been diagnosed, including portable wheelchair ramps and other equipment for the families. It is estimated that 20,000 Americans live with ALS, if today you cannot attend, you can still help those people because every cent matters and donations will be accepted here: https://www.hope-jg.org/copy-of-donate

Hang in the Old Port tonight to celebrate the success!

Saturday, May 20th– Is Street Eat & Beats at Thompson’s Point. This event is SOLD OUT but it is well worth it’s honorable mention. Next year grab your ticket early to enjoy all of our local music and best food vendors! For those of you going, there’s perfect weather with a predicted sun shining 60°. Along with this relaxing weather, we have a few relaxing events to share with you.

De-Stress Your Neck and Unwind Your Shoulders is a class being held at Creative Space Yoga this Saturday afternoon. Here we learn yoga-based therapeutic exercises to help increase our range of motion and de-stress tense necks and shoulders. The goal is that we leave with the skill of knowing how to unwind your neck, shoulders, elbows and wrists. So, if you worked Monday-Friday this may be the best way to loosen up and relax before Saturday night hits! Visit the link above to our calendar, it will take you where you need to be to sign up.

Dance at 4:30pm at Belly Up To The Barre. If you’re torn about exercise and having your favorite -wine, then this class will set you up for the night out! Start with barre and 45 minutes later, your firsts beers and glasses of wine for the night will be served, complimentary.

Attention Beer Drinkers: The American Homebrewers Association will be at Shipyard Brewing for their “Beer Rally,” a session of beer drinking for you to come and learn if you’d like to join! Or, maybe you’d just like to grab a beer and have a good time with a new crowd.

Enjoy the music…@The Porthole Restaurant & Pub, 5pm, Stolen Mojo
@Bull Feeney’s, 9:30pm, The Middle Men
@Rira, 10pm, Sparks The Rescue

Sunday, May 21st– The 2017 Southern Maine Heart Walk is here. Grab some coffee, water and a power bar before you take off and run another 5k or walk Back Cove to help fight heart disease and stroke. The run will start at 8:30am, with the walk starting at 9:15am but regardless of when you end there will be Subway yummy sandwiches provided.

Although it feels so, it isn’t summer quite yet but at Portland’s Ocean Gateway Sunday you will find the Summer Health & Wellness Initiative at 10:30am put on by Maine Supporting Maine (MSM). Your day will be filled with information, education and safety tips. Because MSM believes in the importance of social and emotional wellbeing just as much as our physical selves, and even though the sun came out hot Thursday and made us wish-upon-a-star for our summer bodies, there will be speakers talking about the social and emotional health and wellness issues concerning our community today too. Food from B.good, surprise gift bags, and parking is all FREE! Learn more about MSM here: www.mainesupportingmaine.com

The Flying Gravity Circus Show called Inside starts at 4pm at Circus Maine on Thompson’s Point. If you haven’t been to a circus show this experience will be for you like no other and even if you have gotten over to see Circus Maine perform you can still get excited because Flying Gravity is here to join them. They are kid friendly and here with their brand new performance with acrobats, contortionists and mimes, oh my!

Fifty percent of Portland (21+ yoga and beer fanatics) will love this event. Hosted at our beloved Bissell Brothers, Kat Cynewski instructs Bend & Brews at 5:30pm. Warrior pose 1, 2, 3, you can keep a handle on your favorite beer, right?!
