Friday, August 28: Get dolled up and dressed down for a good cause at the 2nd annual Bow Ties & Bean Boots, a fundraiser to support Teens to Trails, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the opportunities for teens to experience the great outdoors. Attendees are encouraged to don their best bow tie (or maybe boa or ball gown for us ladies), along with their dirrrrrrtiest Bean Boots to celebrate and support the work Teens to Trails is doing for high school Outing Clubs. And don’t worry, there will be a bow tie tying station to help out any noobs who haven’t mastered the art yet. The Marshmallow Cart and Rolling Fatties will be selling their delicious grub, so consider dinner and dessert handled. Your $35 ticket ($40 after noon on Friday) gets you one entry into a raffle to win a pair of Bean Boots, plus a drink ticket to enjoy some Rising Tide, with additional beers available for $5. There will be a silent and live auction, and The Ghost of Paul Revere will provide the tunes. 6-10 pm, The Portland Company, 58 Fore Street, Portland. 21+ only.
More of a coffee person? Then help Arabica Coffee celebrate turning 20! They will be serving free snacks, coffee and beer from Rising Tide, a chance to prove your prowess in a coffee toss, and music by some of the talented baristas. There will also be a chance to get behind the espresso machine and make your own espresso drink, and a roasting demo where you can take home the coffee you see roasted. Important to note, this event will be going down at their larger Commercial Street location, NOT the more intimate (i.e. smaller) Free Street shop. 6-10 pm, 9 Commercial Street, Portland. Free!
Saturday, August 29: In other birthday news, the Craft Beer Cellar, our favorite purveyors of beer to go, are turning 1 and throwing a party to celebrate. Join the beer geek gang from 6pm-8pm for a special event celebrating beer and brewing in Maine, with a tasting hosted by Allagash Brewing Company. Special guests will also include Blue Ox Malthouse, The Hop Yard and Josh Christie, author of “Maine Beer: Brewing in Vacationland.” And instead of asking for presents, they are actually GIVING them, with 5% of the day’s sales being donated to the Grieving Children’s Fund. 6-8 pm, 111 Commercial Street, Portland. Free!
Sunday, August 30: While Woody Allen’s personal life pretty much gives us a case of the heeby jeebies, there is no denying his talent. “Annie Hall” is one of his masterpieces and worth revisiting, or watching the first time. Get yourself down to Congress Square Park for a free screening thanks to Portland Summer Films and enjoy it in the great outdoors. 7:15 pm, One Congress Square, Portland. Free!
