Preble Street is a vital resource for Mainers, offering low-barrier services to individuals facing hunger, poverty and homelessness. Their Food Security Hub, located in South Portland is a sustainable collaborative approach to ending hunger in Maine. Currently, they serve 26 towns in southern Maine and prepare 2,000 hot meals per day.
Originally established at 252 Oxford Street in Portland in 1993, Preble Street relocated to a 30,000-square-foot, mixed used building at 75 Darling Ave in South Portland in 2021. The new space includes a small cafeteria kitchen, and recent upgrades to the loading dock will improve delivery efficiency, allowing for more food to be distributed. Construction of the kitchen is still in the early stages, with completion and full operation expected by 2025. The total project, estimated at $10-12 million, will significantly expand their capacity to serve those in need.
Once the Food Security Hub is complete, they will be able to increase the number of meals made each day from 2,000, to 10,000. The new space will also feature increased freezer capacity to hold 50,000 frozen prepared meals to have on hand.
