Specialty fermentation shop and food counter, Onggi (pronounced “OHng-gee”) is set to open its new location on Washington Avenue this Saturday, April 30th, 2022.
The new 1,300-square-foot space at 131 Washington Avenue, previously home to A&C Grocery, is located just a few doors down from Onggi’s original location and will include an expanded retail storefront and offerings, including a pastry and lunch service led by co-founder Amy Ng. You can expect past favorites such as their sourdough chocolate chip cookies and vinegar shrub sodas alongside new items intended to become easy, delicious, and healthful neighborhood staples. Prepared food items can be enjoyed either at Onggi’s new cozy indoor/outdoor tables or on the go.
On the retail side, Onggi’s offerings will grow with the introduction of in-house ferments, proprietary equipment, and fermenty alcoholic beverages. This includes seasonal kimchis alongside bottles of makgeolli and sake, in addition to beautiful crocks to help make those same ferments at home. The second floor will be home to future classes, workshops, and events.
Co-Founders Erin Zobitz, Marcus Im, and Amy Ng, who categorize themselves as “self-proclaimed food lovers and fermentation nerds”, founded Onggi in 2021 after spending their entire lives enjoying the benefits of fermentation every day – and becoming inspired to share that passion with others. The term Onggi’s comes from Korean earthenware vessels called onggi (옹기) famous for their fermentation-friendly properties and role in everyday life.
In a statement from Onggi’s Co-Owner Marcus Im:
“This expansion is the team’s biggest step since first opening in April of 2021 but is still very much just the beginning. We love being part of this community and are excited to continue to grow our space and keep dreaming of what we can share with our fermenty friends.”
Onggi will be open Wednesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Monday -Tuesday.
