Portland makes a lot of top 10 lists, including best places to live, best places to raise children, most attractive, etc., but here is one list a lot of us probably wish we weren’t topping – most cheaters per capita.
By now you have probably heard about the Ashley Madison hacking by a group calling itself “Impact Team” and the subsequent posting of millions of customers’ data on “the dark web.” If you aren’t familiar, Ashley Madison is a dating website for married people looking to cheat. Their slogan is, “Life is short. Have an affair.” Totally sketchy although totally legal, but definitely NOT something you want posted on the interwebs for the world to see (especially your wife or husband)! Apparently cheating is big business too, as Ashley Madison gets more than 124 million visits per month according to third-party web analytics provider SimilarWeb.
In addition to the recent revelation that one of Ashley Madison’s customers, with not one but TWO accounts, was “19 Kids and Counting” disgraced star Josh Duggar, data geeks and scandal fans have combed through the mountain of data to create a definitive list on where the most cheaters per capita reside in the U.S. and it is good old Portland, Maine. That’s right, Portland. Slow clap Portlanders, slow clap. You’re number one…in cheating. Maybe it’s not our fault though. Our winters are far too long and cold and we need something to keep us warm besides hot coco. In case you’re wondering, San Antonio, Texas, has the second most number of cheaters, followed by Phoenix, Arizona as #3.
Here are a few other things we’ve learned from the leak:
- The majority of users were male. 28 million male to 5 million female to be precise.
- 15,000 of the emails came from government addresses.
No judgements here, but it definitely surprised us to see Portland top this list. What do you think about the data breach? Do the cheaters deserve whatever embarrassment they get, or was this all a horrible invasion of privacy for millions of people who don’t deserve to have their dirty laundry aired by hackers who hate on websites created for cheaters?
