Jordan’s Meats, a well-known American meatpacking company based in Maine and renowned for its red hot dogs, operated facilities in Augusta, Bangor, and Portland. The Portland facility, built in 1962, occupied an entire block in the India Street neighborhood. Iowa Beef Processors (IBP) purchased Jordan’s in 1997, and Tyson Foods acquired IBP in January 2000, which led to the plant’s closure in 2005.
After five years of standing vacant, plans were made to demolish the building and redevelop the land into a mixed-use project, including a hotel, condos, and a restaurant. Demolition had already begun when, on May 6, 2010, a fire broke out and completely destroyed what remained of the building. Investigators later reported that the fire was most likely accidental, marking a dramatic end to the site’s long-standing history.
