The Eastland Hotel, opened in 1927, and was considered the largest hotel in New England at the time. Developed by the Rines family, owners of the major local department store Rines Brothers, it was designed by Portland architect Herbert W. Rhodes, who also designed the State Theatre and the Chapman Building, known today as the Time and Temperature building. In 1946, the hotel made national headlines when it refused to accommodate former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her dog, Fala.
Over the years, the hotel underwent numerous name changes, ownership transitions, and even faced foreclosures. In 2011, it was completely gutted and modernized, reopening as The Westin Portland Harborview on December 12, 2013.
