The Weekend Guide for September 8-10, 2017

Labor day has come and gone but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. We’ve got a weekend full of fun things to do in Portland, Maine.

Friday

Welcome the weekend with a post-work tasting at Hardshore Distilling— who just so happen to be a finalist for USA Today’s “Best Craft Gin Distillery” in America! See what all the fuss is about, and if you see it fit, cast your vote over a refreshing gin cocktail.

Tonight at 7 at the House of Music and Events, come out to listen to the musical stylings and story telling of LT SMOOTH. LT will be joined by Maine’s own Warren McPherson, Xander Nelson and Signed Anonymous at this family friendly event.

More fun for all ages: a FREE rock show is being held at Bayside Bowl. Three of Portland’s best guitar bands (Midwestern Medicine, Battery Steele, and Rigor Samsa) will be playing from 9 until 11:30, and while you’re at it you might as well hit a few pins!

Sassquatch, a fusion band from right here in Maine, is back for one last hurrah on the Slab patio at 8 pm. Join them in the company of fresh beer and pepperoni filled slabs to decompress from the work week.

Saturday

From 10 am to 1 pm, join The Mateja Group for Free Ben & Jerry’s & Get Organized! We all have piles of documents with sensitive information that we might not need hanging around, so this event will have a shredding truck, and did we mention free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream??

If you’re up for making the trip, The Maine Brew Fest hits Sunday River from Friday to Sunday this weekend! Although Friday is sold out, Saturday features unlimited samples from over 25 Maine breweries, beer and oyster pairing, ziplining, disc golf, and more!

Get your groove on at Slab underneath the stars with The Youngerbloods the last appearance of the Slab Summer Music Series!

Keep the groove going for Soul Glow Saturday at Rhum as Dj Hi-Duke spins the grooviest Funk, Soul, Disco, and Boogie tunes from 8 pm-12 am. Rhum also offers a late-night food menu and drink specials from 10 pm-12 am… Coincidence? We think not.

Sunday

The Maine Surfers’ Union and The Rooted Collective unite for a surf + yoga session- Surf to Savasana. This event (for the early risers) will take place at 9 am at Higgins Beach and feature a 1 hour surf lesson and 1 hour yoga flow session. If interested- you must sign up by today (Friday) at 4 pm!

The Maine Brew Fest continues with a Kegs n’ Eggs Brunch from 10 am to 2 pm at Sunday River Brewing Company.

Sundays at the Distillery are the best day of the week! Cocktails (can you say Bloody Mary?), food trucks, need we say more?

This is the last Sunday of the Slab Summer Music Series brings a final Slab patio performance of the Maine Marimba Ensemble… And Slab’s Sunday menu (which features street lasagna and hangover wedge perfection).

Trivia Night from 7-9 pm at Bramhall means you need to make like Tyrion of Game of Thrones– Drink and know things… Because the 1st place winner takes home a $50 gift card!

The Labor Day Weekend Guide for September 1-4th, 2017

Friday

The Heart, Soul & Substance Music Festival kicks off on House Island! Music will start at 3 pm both Friday and Saturday with complimentary shuttle service to and from the island, Maine beer and food trucks!

It’s the First Friday of the month which means the First Friday Art Walk will be taking over Congress Street starting at 5 and while you’re in the Arts District, stop by Empire for First Friday Comedy! Philly to Maine presented by Lone Pine Brewing! Check out 3 Philadelphia based comics, including Mel Harris, Omar Scruggs, and Jamil B. for a night of laughter.

If comedy isn’t your thing, Fat Knuckle Freddy will be on the Slab patio stage at 8 pm, bringing his American Primitive Music. All you need to do is bring your listening ears (and maybe an empty stomach because, well, hand slabs.)

OR, if  Electro-Trap and Dubstep are more your style, Yung Abner will be spinning at Rhum from 8 on! Get your “weird bass” on while sipping on fruity tropical drinks.

Saturday

Saturday is surely a day for the lover of music of any genre in Portland!

Heart, Soul & Substance Day 2 commences, starting with Tim Mercer and ending with Hannah Daman and The Martel Sisters featuring The Maine Youth Rock Orchestra with lots of killer acts in between!

Get ready for radical rock, ruckus, more beer, and more pizza when Wyld Lyfe plays on the Slab stage at 8 pm!

Yet another Thompson’s Point show for the summer, but this time they’re reinventing live performance by taking it from the traditional theater setting and reimagining it in a fully immersive, multi-sensory environment: a 54’x90’ sail tent at No Plan B. Not your average concert!

The Early Mornings are playing at Empire from 9 pm until 1 am to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album and will be accompanied by Jacob McCurdy and Xander Nelson.

Also at 9 pm, and of a completely different genre, Jamaican Reggae and dancehall deejay, Yellowman will be playing at Aura.

Sunday

Start your afternoon off the Sea Dogs game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 1 pm! This game is extra special because it’s also the annual Field of Dreams/Fan Appreciation Day!

It wouldn’t be right to indulge in a little beer since Monday is Labor Day, would it!? Performing live at Rising Tide Brewing Company from 1-4pm is Keanu Keanu. Admission is free, beer is fresh, and music is on point!

… Speaking of day-drinking on a Sunday- As always, Tiki Bowls are 30% off at Rhum starting at noon! After all, don’t they always say, “friends that sip together, stay together”?

AND if Sundays at Stroudwater Distillery at noon brings you to Thompson’s Point for cocktails… Why not check out the new menu at Big J’s Chicken Shack while you’re at it?

In true Old Orchard Beach fashion, get your hot dogs, funnel cakes, and everything nostalgic at OOB Night at Bramhall from 4 pm-close!

3 pm brings Portland fave, The Dapper Gents to the Slab patio stage and so ends the third to last Slab Summer Music Series weekend! Only a few more chances left to enjoy delicious pizza and beer in the company of great music (not to mention Slab’s patio being the only outdoor music venue in Downtown Portland)!

For the country music lovers out there, Scotty McCreery of American Idol will be performing at Aura at 8 pm!

Monday

Bless you, Labor Day, for bringing us a three day weekend!

While the Labor Day on the Bay with Riot Act Cruise might be sold out, you haven’t missed your chance to drink on the water just yet! The Maine BayCycle Cruise still has availability! Take a cruise on Maine’s first and only human powered party boat!

Every Monday at Bull Feeney’s, Geeks Who Drink Trivia from 7-9pm!
