The compound, once known as The Portland Monument Grounds, was initially developed in the 1800’s by local entrepreneur and Captain, Lemuel Moody. The grounds were an anchor for locals and visitors alike featuring a marine signal tower for communication between land and sea, a community dance hall and bowling alley where folks would gather to celebrate the return from a voyage and a guesthouse for seafaring travelers on stopovers in Portland. Today the grounds boast a spacious six-room guesthouse, and a distinctive terraced courtyard tucked between the Best Bower and the Observatory.

The Best Bower is situated alongside the Portland Observatory, one of Maine’s most adored landmarks. The guesthouse boasts six spacious guest-rooms each unique in layout, design and custom furnishings. Our distinctive terraced courtyard, embowered by the limbs of a giant oak, lined with custom stonework, seasonal plantings, café tables and chairs makes for an ideal spot to relax while admiring the stature of the Observatory and the quiet buzz of Munjoy Hill. Guests will enjoy walking proximity to local breweries & distilleries, galleries & museums, boutique shopping, culinary delights, and the Eastern Promenade park highlighting sweeping views of Casco Bay and a mile’s long trail system that leads to vibrant energy of Portland harbor and the cobblestone lined streets of the Old Port.

My new favorite place to stay in Portland (and I've done almost every hotel in the area). It feels like a nice apartment and I did not hear one peep from any other neighbors staying there. Close to the park and still a good distance away from everything else. Not to mention there is a market right next door for any snacks or drinks.

Best "hotel" in Portland. Incredible attention to detail in the design. Love the finishes and care taken to put together a very homey and comfortable place to stay. Munjoy Hill is a great residential neighborhood with wonderful coffee/bakeries within walking distance.

Very impressed with our stay at the Best Bower. It was so cozy and clean and the design was very well thought out. The owner is very responsive and helpful. The location is quiet and only a 10-20 minute walk from food and shopping! We are already looking forward to planning our next visit to Portland, and when we do, we will definitely be staying here again.

I could not be happier with our stay at Best Bower. The location is insanely convient with tons of dining options, shopping, and scenic views within walking distance. The neighborhood is quiet and there is a shockingly well stocked convenient store right across the street from the guest house. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and well equipped with all needs including bamboo toilet paper and other sustainable toiletries. There are thoughtful touches, (like the pour over coffee in the rooms and shared kitchenette for all guests) and beautiful art everywhere. The feel is a very comfy chic. We felt super safe, with the fire department located right next door. Parking was never a hassle. The contact free check in and out was just the icing on the fantastic stay cake! Thanks Best Bower!

I grew up in Portland, so staying anywhere but home has always felt strange to me. Best Bower is different — staying here feels like visiting with your most thoughtful, chic, and quintessentially Maine relative. The rooms are tastefully done and deeply comfortable. The location puts you in the heart of a real neighborhood, walkable to literal dozens of great Portland things. The common areas and service are very helpful and functional. I can’t wait to come back!
