A jungle oasis in the Old Port, Terrarium is an indoor plant shop and café specializing in common and rare house plants. Serving up snacks and beverages (including beer & wine), you can sip and snack while browsing for a new house plant, pottery planters, and terrariums.

Terrarium is a great spot if you’re looking to add greenery and warmth to your space, and provides terrarium building classes that great for first dates, team outings, or just a rainy day.

Take a break from brick and mortar of the city with an escape to Terrarium.

Don’t forget about Terrarium’s Happy Hour, this winter their offering half off all food and drink Wednesday – Friday, 4 pm – 6 pm

So much fun! They have so many great choices for terrariums or even a bog garden with carnivorous plants. The staff is super friendly and helpful! They have great choices for the terrarium plants. They also have lots of already made ones that you can use as ideas. I definitely recommend visiting here and making one. They even supply food and drinks!

Gotta love a work trip to one of the coolest plant shops in ALL of New England. Terrarium has a friendly & knowledgeable team & the Owner was appreciative of every customer who was in his shop. Terrarium also sells some designer & rare plants, ones I've only seen for sale on websites. We purchased a Monstera Deliciosa Albo & a Money Tree Variegated "Milkway".My daughter very much enjoyed creating her terrarium & we look forward to returning here in the future! Many times!!!

This is such a unique gem of an experience! Love the place, love the people, love the plants! It’s wonderful that all of the ‘stuff’ is included in the price of the vessel, so it removes any financial considerations from the creative process.

This was so fun! All the plants were so pretty, there was a great assortment of glass terrariums to choose from and the staff was very friendly and helpful! Highly recommend. Go with a friend/partner/family member asap!

Great selection of terrarium plants and other rare exotic aroids with few range of succulents/ cactus. Spacious workshop area, plants are priced higher side for a small 2 inch pot, overall must visit and take some home.

Best spot in Portland for healthy houseplants, a casual date night /hang with friends, or experimenting with carnivorous plants and vivariums.The owners are some of the most enthusiastic, knowledgable, and kind people I know. Truly a gem!I've been a returning customer ever since we built our wedding centerpieces there , and my terrarium/isopod hobby has grown. 100/10 recommend visiting!

Hanging at Terrarium is always pure joy. I love building terrariums, grabbing great plant gifts and even my crystals at this gorgeous and unique Old Port gem. Every time I visit, they’ve got something new and fun. And don’t get me started on the delicious food and bev! Perfect snacks, crafted with love in house, lots of local beers and fun non-alcoholic options, too. Love their special lemonades. The owners and the staff always make you feel welcome. And are happy to answer questions, share terrarium building techniques and help you pick out the perfect plant to match your level of green thumb. My partner and I had a wonderful experience here. The process of building a terrarium was very easy with the guidance of the team there. We found it especially calming and enjoyable to be surrounded by plants as we created our tiny worlds. Local beverages were a great added touch. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for date spot, friend group activity, or solo activity! Good vibes all around.

Great atmosphere with so many plants. The owner was working that night and was very friendly and knowledgeable. Great concept and well implemented. Very good for a date night. You can bring your own glass or select one to buy from them. I selected a glass brick that looks great on my windowsill at home.

Went there with our kids last summer. Traveled With our terrariums to North Carolina and then California. They are full of growth. Every city needs this business. We had so much fun with our three kids. The owner accidentally knocked over one of our kids creations but was so nice and gracious that it continues to be my sons best memory of our month long east coast trip

Terrarium is my favorite business in Portland, It’s a great spot for local regulars to come enjoy a drink and some snacks, play games or build terrariums. It’s also an awesome place to bring people who are visiting for a unique and fun experience. 10 out of 10 would recommend 👍

What a great little place! A group of six of us came here on the recommendation of a friend and it was worth it! It used to be an old bar & has a cool, underground feel. There’s a wheelchair accessible entrance as well. You choose your jar first. There is a nice selection, round, squares, even a cute little mushroom one! Then you find a spot to sit at the tables and they have bowls of rocks, dirt, and tools. Someone will come by the table and explain what to do. The gentleman who helped us was fantastic! He clearly loved his job and was so knowledgeable. It was awesome to see someone working but so happy! He also cut plants for all of us and distributed them. There are extras you can pay for as well like stone creatures like ladybugs or turtles or stone headstones. Then these obelisk stones as well (not really sure what they are called?) we got a white ladybug (extra $15) you can kind of see in the terrarium picture and an obelisk (extra $15). The glass bottle we chose (medium size option was $55). The things included in price was the small rocks, large rocks, dirt, and microscopic bugs (that help your terrarium do it’s thing).There are drinks and food to order as well like water, beer, and wine. For food, it’s a bit random stuff. We got the chicken nachos and the chicken was fantastic! But the rest was just average things. Nachos you could easily make at home but it was nice they offered some sort of nourishment.Overall, we had a great time and highly recommend this place for a date night, friends, work party, or family time!

We had a great time building terrariums at Terrarium! The staff is very knowledgeable and super helpful. They have a huge array of plants, glass, and cool additions for your terrarium. There are snacks and drinks to enjoy while you’re there. We’ll definitely be back!

Honestly, such a random shop but we stumbled on this spot early in the day and actually came back later just to buy and create our own terrariums. Prices are reasonable (let's be honest, the margins must be insane given the greenery grows itself) and staff are friendly. Nice, off-the-beaten-path activity to do in Portland.

We walked into this place without really knowing what it was, and left with a beautiful terrarium we created ourselves. I've been meaning to start a terrarium, but they're a bit of a science experiment and require some knowledge to get the right balance-- and perfect balance is required for those incredible systems you see that have been sealed for 30+ years! The two Robs we spoke to were so friendly and helpful, and answered all our questions without overwhelming us. They made it so easy to start building without worrying about the science, and were happy to explain reasons for specific the materials, plants, and critters they provided.This was also a really great value: cheaper than if I had decided to make one by myself, and it came with expert guidance!I don't know if the terrarium we built will survive for 30 years, but I'm confident it'll be around for a very long time.

Loved this! I walked in with my husband, looked around, and the next thing we knew we were building our own terrariums on the fly. The owner was super cool and answered all questions we had to help us leave with some really cool terrariums! 10/10 will come back!

Super cute place with a relaxing atmosphere! The owner was incredibly friendly and makes an amazing guacamole. When you're done eating you can make a terrarium too...highly recommend this hidden gem!

We stumbled into Terrarium on our way back from the super busy area of Portland down by the water, having been unsuccessful in our trip to Portland. We heard some music and saw some plants, so we poked around. The owner was super great, the pico was 11/10 and the guacamole....?? 15/10. Phenomenal. We decided not to make a terrarium ourselves (but I guess you can take one back on your lap on the plane?) but we would absolutely visit this place again for the snacks and the guac.

My husband and I were staying in Portland on vacation and looked for things to do on a rainy day. I HIGHLY recommend taking time to stop at Terrarium during ANY type of weather. Both owners were welcoming, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the process to build a terrarium. I learned to take better care of some houseplants, too.We walked in a bit intimidated about the process but were immediately put at ease. We walked out with an awesome looking terrarium. I suggest you order peanut butter bars to snack on while you create!We will be back the next time we take the journey from NY to ME and will spread the word about this awesome establishment.

One of the coolest things in town! You can go in and make your own terrarium or get one of their pre made ones or just get plants! Super good plant selection. They said they will have a full liquor license and food too, so you can eat and drink and make a terrarium.
