The 2023-24 season for the Maine Celtics kicked off at Capital City on November 10th, marking the 14th season of NBA G League basketball in Maine and the third under the Maine Celtics name. Blaine Mueller, a seasoned assistant from the Milwaukee Bucks, stepped in as the 9th head coach for the Maine Celtics, taking over from Alex Barlow, who departed to become an assistant coach at Butler University. Jarell Christian, the former head coach of Maine and Capital City, continues in his role as the general manager for the second consecutive season.
Adding to the roster, Boston Celtics rookie Jordan Walsh, the 38th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has been assigned to Maine and is anticipated to play a key role in the starting lineup this season. At just 19 years old, Walsh stands as one of the youngest players in the NBA. Another familiar face, Boston Celtics Two-Way Player JD Davison, returns to Maine on a Two-Way contract for the second consecutive season. With a successful stint last season, Davison, now 21, is set to contribute his skills after being the lone selection by Boston in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Tony Snell, a seasoned NBA veteran, rejoins the Maine Celtics for his second season, bringing a wealth of experience with 601 career NBA games under his belt. Having joined Maine late last season, Snell played in 14 games for the Maine Celtics.
Similar to the previous season, the initial segment of the NBA G League season is dubbed the Showcase Cup. The first 14 games will lead up to a winner-take-all tournament at the NBA G League Winter Showcase in December. Following the Showcase, the standings will reset for a 34-game Regular Season, followed by the NBA G League Playoffs. Last season, Maine made it to both the Showcase Cup and the NBA G League Playoffs, marking their first playoff appearance since 2017.
