In 1859, the former Maine State House was relocated to the corner of Market and Congress Street and repurposed as a police office. An engine house was constructed adjacent to it in 1864. However, both buildings were destroyed in the fire of July 4, 1866. They were replaced in 1867 by the building shown in the throwback photograph. In 1908, Portland acquired the neighboring properties following the burning of City Hall, intending to expand Lincoln Park, though this plan never materialized. Instead, the new Central Fire Station was constructed on this site in 1924 and remains standing to this day.
