In 1960, the completion of Tukey’s Bridge marked a significant milestone in Maine’s infrastructure. Named after Lemuel Tukey, a notable tavern owner and toll collector during the late 18th century at Back Cove Bridge, this bridge stood as a testament to the state’s progress.
The following year, in 1961, the Falmouth Spur of the Maine Turnpike extending to Yarmouth was opened, further enhancing transportation connectivity in the region.
Urban development accelerated with the opening of additional sections in Portland in 1971, followed by the extension of I-295 through Brunswick to Topsham in 1973. The year 1974 saw the inauguration of the section connecting the Maine Turnpike in Scarborough to South Portland, enhancing travel efficiency.
Further expansion continued with the opening of the segment from Topsham to Gardiner in 1977, bolstering Maine’s transportation network and fostering economic growth across the region.
