Constructed in 1903 by developer James Cunningham, The Lafayette Hotel stands as a testament to Portland’s history. Named after Marquis de Lafayette, a key ally of George Washington during the American Revolution, the hotel was designed to withstand fire, a precautionary measure following the devastating fire of 1866.
With 162 hotel rooms, a billiard hall, and a grand dining room on the 7th floor, The Lafayette Hotel offered luxurious accommodations and amenities. It even boasted its own pharmacy, catering to the needs of guests.
In 1967, the building underwent a significant change, being converted into an apartment building, a transformation that continues to this day.
