THE PORTLAND LANTERN WALK
The Portland Lantern Walk is a program of The Friends of Deering Oaks (FoDO), a nonprofit citizen organization committed to preserving, protecting, and enhancing Portland’s historic Deering Oaks Park and promoting its use by residents and visitors. In 2015 this signature park program began as a way to connect the community to to this incredible green space through public arts.
Each year, hundreds of people come out to participate in this event. Our goal? To bring people to the park through public art. In the weeks leading up to the walk we produce multiple FREE lantern making workshops – lead by a professional working artist – that are open to all ages, all abilities, all languages and cultures.
In 3 years our audience for this program has more than doubled. In 2017 more than 500 people joined us in the walk and hundreds more participated in the workshops throughout the city.
