The ongoing Congress Square Redesign project has successfully completed its first phase, primarily concentrating on the reconfiguration of the Congress, High, and Free streets intersection. The aim was to enhance traffic flow, achieved through the upgrade of traffic signal equipment and the elimination of one entrance to Free Street and an expansion of the pedestrian plaza in front of the Portland Museum of Art. However, it’s worth noting that these alterations resulted in the removal of a few parking spaces and an overall transformation of the intersection’s appearance.
Looking ahead, the second phase of the project will shift its focus to Congress Square Park. Planned improvements include the establishment of year-round community spaces featuring additional seating, tree planting, enhanced lighting, a natural playscape, and a prominent sculpture by artist Sarah Sze as the centerpiece. The adjacent plaza in front of the Portland Museum of Art is also slated for improvements.
The overarching objective of this redesign is to provide more spaces for community gatherings, allowing individuals to enjoy time with friends and family amidst a greener urban environment. Anticipated to commence in Spring 2024, the second phase seeks to further enrich the downtown experience for residents and visitors alike. We will continue to report on the developments as the project unfolds.
