Knightville’s new neighborhood market and butchery, Barber Brothers Meat & Provisions, opened its doors on Ocean Street to an eager public on Wednesday, September 27th. “We had a line out the door of about 25 people,” co-owner Max Barber told the Portland Press Herald. Just about everything the shop carries is local, from meat to seasonal produce to craft beer and everything in between (think cheese, bread, wine, and more).
Formerly home to Smaha’s Legion Square Market, it was only fitting that a building with such rich history be reinvigorated by a family whose ties to the community run deep. Before brothers and co-owners Max and Jack came along, their grandfather Gus founded Barber Foods in 1955. Following in his entrepreneurial footsteps, the brothers started flipping burgers and serving fries out of their first food truck, Mainely Burgers, at Scarborough Beach in 2012. Fast forward a decade, and they now own and operate a brick-and-mortar in Cambridge, as well as a fleet of five food trucks.
Barber Bros. is the family’s latest business venture. “We’re excited to introduce new and local products to the space and to continue the legacy built over the last 83 years by Smaha’s and Legion Square Market,” said co-owner Jack on the Barber Brothers website. Barber Bros. is currently open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm.
Some of the local brands and products carried at Barber Bros. include Cape Whoopies, Luke’s Lobster, Wyman’s of Maine, Parlor Ice Cream Co., Empanada Club Maine, Micucci’s tomato sauces, Little Brother dumplings, Standard Baking Co. bread, Two Fat Cats baked goods, CBD coffee, and so much more.
Stop by Barber Bros. at 101 Ocean Street to peruse the local products and stock up on everything you need (and probably more) for the holiday season.
