PORTLAND, Maine — June 16th, 2021 — The Best of 2021 Portland Old Port Awards are back after going on a brief hiatus in 2020. Nominations will be accepted for two weeks beginning today, Wednesday, June 16th, and can be submitted through midnight on Wednesday, June 30th.
Due to the massive disruptions caused by the coronavirus, the awards were not held in 2020. “Last year was challenging for so many local businesses due to the COVID-19 restrictions that we didn’t feel it was the right choice to hold the Best of Awards,” said Nathan O’Leary, Founder, and Publisher of PortlandOldPort.com. “However, as more businesses are reopening at partial or full capacity it feels like the right time to revive the awards and celebrate deserving Portland businesses.”
Voters can choose from a list of carefully curated categories, including Best Happy Hour, Best Tattoo Shop, Best Hotel, Best Maine Beer, Best Comedian, Best TV News Anchor, Best Food Truck, Best Blog/Website, Best Bank/Credit Union, Best New Business, and many more.
After the nomination process is complete, there will be a 30-day voting period where voters can cast a ballot for the nominees of each category starting on Thursday, July 1st. Halfway through the process on Thursday, July 15th, the field will be narrowed to 10 finalists for the final two weeks of voting, with voting ending on Friday, July 30th at midnight. Voters can vote once per day per email address by visiting here.
In 2019, 3,760 people submitted a total of 30,000 nominations for area businesses. This year’s winners will be announced virtually the first week of August and Portland Old Port is planning to also honor them with an in-person awards gala if and when it is deemed safe to do so due to evolving coronavirus guidelines.
