Opened on April 18, 1994, Hadlock Field serves as the home of the Portland Sea Dogs. After nine years of affiliation with the Florida Marlins, the Sea Dogs announced a new partnership with the Boston Red Sox. This change brought forth an exciting addition to the ballpark: a replica of Fenway Park’s iconic Green Monster. Named the Maine Monster, this feature aimed to not only assist in training future Red Sox left fielders for the challenges of the Green Monster but also to infuse the ballpark with unique character.
Construction of the Maine Monster started on October 28, 2002, following a fan contest that selected its name. Spanning 160 feet in length, crafted from wood, and painted in the signature green hue, the Maine Monster closely mirrors its Fenway counterpart in height, standing at 37 feet tall. A 12-foot screen crowns the wall, strategically placed to intercept home run balls. Unlike Fenway, however, seating additions are not feasible due to the proximity of a railroad track located directly behind the Maine Monster.
