As Thanksgiving unfolds, it also marks the 111th Annual Turkey Day clash between Portland High School and Deering High School, a tradition that predates Fitzpatrick Stadium and the looming presence of Interstate 295.
Long before these developments, the spirited rivalry between Portland and Deering has been a cornerstone of annual Thanksgiving festivities.
Originally recognized as Portland Stadium, the venue underwent a transformation in 1989, renamed to pay homage to the esteemed James J. Fitzpatrick—a revered figure in Maine’s athletic history. The roots of this historic matchup delve into the past, with the inception of Interstate 295 construction around 1970.
In 2001, Fitzpatrick Stadium underwent an extensive $1.4 million renovation initiative. This comprehensive project encompassed the replacement of the natural grass surface with state-of-the-art FieldTurf, the installation of a new rubberized track, and the enhancement of restroom facilities. The aim was to modernize and elevate the overall stadium experience.
In September 2023, a group of investors, operating under the name USL to Portland, successfully secured the rights to establish a future United Soccer Leauge team. Subject to city approval, the team is slated to kick off its inaugural season at Fitzpatrick Stadium in 2025.
Kickoff for the Turkey Day clash is set for 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
