The parking lot adjacent to Ocean Gateway, opposite India Street, is potentially undergoing a transformation into a new waterfront park. The city has secured a significant portion of the required $2.4 million for the Portland Harbor Common through federal grants, with further fundraising efforts being facilitated by the non-profit Portland Parks Conservancy.
Following the discontinuation of the ferry route to Nova Scotia in 2018, the area previously utilized as a queuing space for passengers was repurposed into a parking facility. Presently, a portion of the parking spaces caters to island residents commuting to the mainland for work. However, during the summer months, the lot frequently reaches its maximum capacity. Two public forums discussing this project were held in 2021.
With the current lot accommodating 250 vehicles, the upcoming park will utilize half of this space. The remaining 125 spots will be prioritized for individuals employed in and around the waterfront, although specific allocation methods are yet to be finalized. City officials anticipate construction to start this coming fall, with the park potentially opening to the public by 2025.
