In recent years, the University of Southern Maine has been making some major additions to their Portland campus – and their next project is underway. In 2023, USM completed the build of The McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success as well as The Portland Commons. This provided the Portland campus with their first residential building, allowing students to now live both on the Gorham and Portland campuses. The Portland Commons are equipped with 580 beds with a mix of different apartment styles. This building has stunning views of the peninsula skyline as well as Back Cove.
Their newest project, The Crewe Center for the Arts, broke ground this past October. This state of the art building will be home to USM’s Osher School of Music as well as growing the Kate Cheney Chappell ‘83 Center for Book Arts.
This will continue to expand the Portland campus allowing for the growth of USM’s performing and visual arts programs. This building will become a vital part of the transformation of the Portland campus, and allow for more opportunities for students studying in Portland.
The Crewe Center for the Arts is set to open in 2025, and will cost $63 million to complete. This will be nearly 40,000 square feet and feature a performance hall, arts lab, visual arts studio, as well as the Great Hall Gallery exhibition space. USM hopes that the completion of this project will boost enrollment to the school of music, and provide students with a place to learn and grow as artists.
