The Porthole Restaurant & Pub in Portland, ME offers a casual waterside dining experience with live music and a bustling dockside atmosphere. While the setting is enjoyable, be prepared for a long wait. We were told our wait time would be 20 minutes, but it stretched to nearly 45, even with many open tables. The explanation was that the wait was for the kitchen, not seating.Once seated, service was relatively quick. My wife ordered a Lobster Roll ($34) with a cup of clam chowder, while I had the Whole Belly Clams (MP = $34). The food arrived within 10 to 15 minutes. The clams were plump, tender, and juicy—definitely the highlight of the meal. My wife found the lobster roll tasty but lacking in lobster meat compared to what she’s accustomed to. The clam chowder was decent, but not outstanding. The ambiance of dining by the water is a big draw, but this spot feels like a tourist trap, especially when cruise ships are in port. The large crowds make it feel a bit overwhelming.

We stopped for drinks after our Silver Shadow Portland Highlights Tour. On Sunday afternoon it was packed. After ordering Beer and Wine, we decided to try their Maine Lobster Roll. It was awesome! HUGE chunks of fresh Maine Lobster & great chips too. We were in their outdoor area with walkup ordering and live entertainment. We sat inside behind the stage as we delighted in the Lobster Roll.

Amazing food. Fast service. I try fish and chips everywhere. Taste is always subjective, but when you get great food, you know it. Fish was fresh, perfectly flaky, and not greasy or dry. Breaded to perfection. Portion size was more than I could eat. Prices were fine, maybe a tad high, but worth it. The service was great. Waitress was literally running from table to table. They were probably a bit short-handed for a cruise ship port, but the order was accurate, fast, and the waitress was courteous. The atmosphere was great also with live music and a deck overlooking the pier and bay.

Great fish and chips. The fish was cooked perfect and very fresh. The clam chowder and seafood stew very tasty. The service was wonderful and the views were nice but not at our table at the end of the dock. Can’t have everything.

I enjoyed the majority of my experience at The PortHole while visiting the state. The outdoor seating is plentiful. We opted for indoor seating due to the wind picking up on a nice evening. My food was fresh and tasty. I ordered the oysters & lobster meal. My lobster was fresh and good. I had a spirited beverage which was also very good. The tvs, music and atmosphere was good for a summer night! Our server was good until it came to divide the bill. For part of our payment she was given 2 credit cards from myself and my friend. Both cards were to be charged at $83.00 each. My friends card was charged at $83.00. When I checked a few days later, my card was charged at $93.00 dollars. I don't know why this $10 increase happened. Her tip was included in the total sum. I did not call the restaurant to ask for a refund or complain. I guess the waitress found a way to get what she needed. This is my only warning to check your balance when your visit is over. I was in town for a conference and my time was limited to prepare to travel home so handling this type of error was something not on my to do list. I would go back to this establishment, but I'd only use cash for my payment.
