Larry & Joe will teach attendees a two-chord gabán, a fundamental rhythmic and harmonic structure of the musical style, la música llanera.
Learn how strings are used percussively through muting and golpes to create the iconic joropo feel. Though Larry & Joe will use the cuatro (an instrument intrinsically bound to the Venezuelan identity) as a teaching tool, this language is translatable to other string instruments like the banjo. Larry will explain how birds like the gabán (great blue heron) have influenced Venezuelan musical cosmology as Joe interprets.
Instruments are welcome and encouraged but not required.
FREE to attend! All ages and abilities are welcome. Recommended for 12+

Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, LARRY & JOE are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo, they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.

This workshop is part of a collaboration between Mayo Street Arts and the East End Community School. This MSA-EECS Partnership is a portion of a year-round approach toward engagement with our neighbors in East Bayside. Elementary students and faculty vote to select artists to visit the school and tailor workshops to support the classroom curriculum.
