RE-SOUNDING HISTORY @ Fort Gorges Portland, ME 04101
Jul 27 @ 3:15 pm – 6:15 pm
RE-SOUNDING HISTORY @ Fort Gorges Portland, ME 04101 | Portland | Maine | United States

A place & plant based sound meditation in Aucocisco/Fort Gorges.

Join Hogfish, Friends of Fort Gorges, and the Wild Seed Project for an event like no other this summer.

Beauty is often one of the first invitations to connect. How could the beauty of a summer afternoon in Aucocisco, on modern day Fort Gorges, with gorgeous meditative indigenous and non-indigenous collaborative music weaving in the sounds of nearby plants, while receiving gentle hands-on-healing help you to connect? What would happen if we all took a moment together to allow our eardrums and our hearts to be moved by the beauty of the sound of all living beings coming together to make a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts? How can we re-sound history in a place like Fort Gorges for a better future?

Enjoy a boat ride across Aucocisco, present day Casco Bay, and quickly arrive at Fort Gorges. Stroll into the courtyard, put down a yoga mat or picnic blanket or sit in the grass, and invite yourself to listen to the ocean waves and call of the birds, while hands-on-healers offer their assistance to leave your cares behind and enter the presence of the sensory world. The musical offerings will begin with Hogfish artist-in-residence and Wabanaki singer and dancer Isaac Syliboy who will be joined by Hogfish artist-in-residence and composer/bassist Evan Premo for 40 minutes of instrumental loop-based improvisation for meditation and deep listening, where Evan weaves in music produced live from the electrical impulses of native plants selected by the Wild Seed Project.

At the end of the meditation, spend time exploring the island on your own or on a guided tour, go for a swim, or continue to listen to the reverberations in the space and in your soul.

RAIN DATE

Sunday, July 28th

TICKETS

General Admission includes a round trip boat ride to and from Fort Gorges, leaving from a public boat launch on the East End. Exact location TBA.

Adventure Ticket is for anyone who would like to join us at Fort Gorges by their own means: kayak, dingy, swimming, etc. and does not need one of the limited spaces on our two boats. These tickets are a suggested donation of $50. A QR code for donating will also be available on the island should you decide to join us spur of the moment.

TIMING

Boat A leaves at 3:15pm and returns at 6:15pm
Boat B leaves at 3:45pm and returns at 5:45pm

The event itself will run 4:15-5:15pm

If taking the boat, please be ready to go 15 minutes before your departure time. Your boat will be assigned after your ticket purchase. We will fill up the second boat with the first 40 ticket buyers, and then the first boat with the next 35 ticket buyers.

*** PLEASE NOTE that parking at the East End beach in general will be very challenging, especially so near the public boat launch (we suggest that you allow lots of extra time).

ACCESSIBILITY

Please note due to the nature of this event, with the necessity of boarding boats, and disembarking on uneven surfaces, that all attendees should be able bodied and wear close-toed, flat shoes with rubber soles.

  • Jugs of cold water will be available, but we encourage you to bring your own container.
  • A yoga mat and/or blanket for the meditation

QUEER MOVEMENT

with Lauren Znachko

1st Wednesday of every month | 7:00pm | FREE

Our queer yoga class is meant to provide safer space for queer and trans folks to gather together and move our bodies. The guidance and facilitation is trauma informed with the intention to decenter cis-het notions of bodies, language, and togetherness. Movement will be gentle and by invitation, modifications and rest will be offered and encouraged, hands on guidance is based on explicit consent, which is never assumed.

Wear whatever feels most comfortable for you. If your movement is limited for whatever reason, we will make accommodations so that you are able to feel at ease and a part of the group. If you have questions, concerns, or would like to make requests ahead of time, please feel free to email us.

Pre-registration is recommended.
